Heel pain: treatment, symptoms and main causes

By podartis avanterra

Foot health is essential for the balance and serenity of the entire organism. Supporting all the skeletal structures of the body, the foot has a very important role and must therefore be preserved and cared for properly.

However, there are inflammations that affect the three different areas of the foot: tarsus, metatarsus and toes. One of the most common disorders in Italy is heel pain . An inflammation that causes severe pain in the heel or calcaneus .

How to cure heel pain ? How to heal heel pain effectively and quickly? Let's find out the most important information about heel pain: treatment, symptoms and causes .

How to understand if you have heel pain?

One of the main symptoms of heel pain is pain , which manifests itself in an acute way and is localized along the heel and calcaneus. Typically, the pain associated with heel pain occurs especially in the early morning, as soon as you wake up , or when you put your feet on the ground after a long period of sitting/lying down.

This inflammation can appear in childhood and must be treated immediately to prevent more serious and complex pathologies.

To diagnose heel spur you can:

  • contact a specialist, who will carry out a clinical analysis of the foot;
  • perform instrumental examinations such as ultrasound, X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging.

Heel pain: treatment and duration depend on the severity of the inflammation. Generally, if there are microtraumas caused by incorrect foot support, heel pain can heal in 15-20 days . In severe cases, when the periosteum is particularly inflamed and the tendon fascia is in traction, treatment of heel pain can take up to 2 or 3 months.

The main causes of heel pain

Heel pain can occur due to certain previous pathologies:

  • infantile heel spur , often associated with a growth disorder. This problem begins at age 8 and affects young people and adolescents up to 14 years of age. In this case, the tibia grows faster than the triceps muscle and, therefore, the distal insertion of the triceps is constantly under tension. When the child walks a lot or plays sports, he or she feels the first pain;
  • heel spur . It occurs when the talus bone causes tension in the plantar fascia. In reaction to this imbalance, the body tends to deposit calcium salts that accumulate along the muscle fiber. This causes intense pain when the foot rests on the ground;
  • plantar fasciitis . This inflammation affects the muscle bands that allow you to absorb body weight while walking.

Heel pain: how to treat it?

To treat heel pain, it is important, first of all, to diagnose it. The most commonly used therapeutic treatment is orthotic . Through the daily use of a dedicated insole, the foot can stabilize movement , benefiting from the shock-absorbing function offered by the orthosis. The use of an insole structurally designed to support and protect the foot , performing a shock-absorbing action, allows for movement to be stabilized and performs a useful action to eliminate inflammation.

There are other remedies including shock waves , laser therapy, radiofrequencies , which however are not always effective answers, as they aim to resolve only the painful symptom. Otherwise, combining an Avanterra insole with shock waves is the best solution.
